The marathon's weird 42.195 km is all because of a royal balcony seat
In 1908, organisers stretched the route from Windsor Castle to the stadium so the finish line sat below the royal box. The exact distance stuck. 👑
The marathon's official distance of 42.195 kilometers (26 miles 385 yards) has a surprisingly specific origin: the 1908 London Olympics. Before that, marathon lengths varied from roughly 40 kilometers to about 42.75 kilometers, with no universal standard. [1]
For the 1908 Games, the route was set from Windsor Castle to the White City Stadium. The start was placed below the castle's East Terrace, and the finish line was positioned in front of the royal box, where Queen Alexandra and other members of the royal family sat. This arrangement stretched the course to exactly 26 miles and 385 yards. [1][2]
Why the distance stuck
The 1908 race was dramatic: Italian runner Dorando Pietri entered the stadium first but collapsed repeatedly and was helped across the line, leading to his disqualification and American John Hayes being declared the winner. The spectacle and controversy drew huge public attention, cementing the 1908 distance in the public imagination. [2]
Despite this, the distance was not immediately fixed. For the next few Olympics, organizers used different lengths: the 1912 Stockholm marathon was about 40.2 kilometers, and the 1920 Antwerp marathon was 42.75 kilometers. It was only in 1921 that the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) officially standardized the marathon at 42.195 kilometers, based on the 1908 London course. [1][3]
- 1908
London Olympics marathon runs from Windsor Castle to White City Stadium, finishing in front of the royal box.
- 1912
Stockholm Olympics marathon uses a different course of about 40.2 km.
- 1920
Antwerp Olympics marathon measures 42.75 km.
- 1921
IAAF officially standardizes the marathon at 42.195 km.
So the next time you run or watch a marathon, remember that the odd 385 yards were added not for athletic reasons but to place the finish line beneath a royal balcony. That accidental detail became the global standard. [1][2]
